8 tricky English words you might be mispronouncing


Recently hundreds of short videos giving pronounciation tips have been added to Oxford Dictionaries YouTube Channel. Here you can check the pronounciation of 10 tricky words to get started. I gave the definition and Russian translation  for Russian-speaking learners of English.


meme  
1. an idea that is passed from one member of society to another, not in the genes but often by people copying it
2. an image, a video, a piece of text, etc. that is passed very quickly from one Internet user to another, often with slight changes that make it humorous

gilet -  a light thick jacket without sleeves   ( тужурка, жилетка, безрукавка)


ombre - having colors or tones that shade into each other —used especially of fabrics in which the color is graduated from light to dark  (переходящий из светлого в тёмный, деграде  (плавный переход одного цвета или оттенка в другой), тип окраски волос, предполагающий отличный от корней цвет концов волос)



usurp - to take a job or position that belongs to someone else without having the right to do this

risible  - silly or bad enough to make you laugh (смешливый; смешной; смехотворный)



machismo - aggressive male behaviour that emphasizes the importance of being strong rather than being intelligent and sensitive (мужской шовинизм; диктаторские замашки; политика сильной руки; мужественность)



synonym - a word or expression that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another in the same language (cиноним)



paradigm - 
1. a typical example or model of something
2.  the complete set of the different forms of a word 
(парадигма)
